Yellowknife Air Shuttle
The Yellowknife service center is located 942 miles north of Edmonton and has been servicing the northern communities since 1949. Due to it’s location it requires some innovative handling of freight to ensure our customers receive their shipments throughout the year. Every Spring for approximately 3-4 weeks beginning mid April, freight is air shuttled across the Mackenzie River, as the winter ice road is melting and the ferry cannot yet be launched. Freight moves by road from Edmonton to Fort Providence at which time it is off loaded and shuttled across the river via helicopter, taking 2 pallets at a time using special slings. Once across the river the freight is reloaded into trailers and carriers on to Yellowknife for delivery. Customers have an option of having the freight held in Edmonton until the ferry is operational, if there is no rush. This entire procedure is repeated in the Fall while the ice builds up again in preparation for the winter road.
